Going to the Light Side

When I started to paint, I found myself naturally hesitent to have distinct value shifts. I understand that this is quite common with new artists.  It took persistence and a will to overcome this issue to finally break through.  I call it "going to the dark side", but without the darkside there is no true light shining in your painting.  My focus with these latest paintings has been making them glow with light, but in doing so, I had to assure that the darks were dark enough.  With the light, I'm making sure it's not true white, but rather white with yellow for the direct whites and white with cobalt/alazarin for the shadows with a few variants thrown in for good measure.In this painting,  Friends",  it is the contrast of shadow and direct light, warm and cool that compliment each other.    I hope I have achieved what I set out to do and that I can continue to explore this new path.  Let there be light!!!
